Dressed for Learning

As we head into a new school year, we want to make sure all students feel confident, comfortable, and ready to learn. That includes knowing what’s expected when it comes to what we wear to school each day. DoDEA’s dress code is simple, clear, and consistent across all schools.  

The Basics: What You Need to Wear 

• Tops with sleeves are required during the school day. (Sleeveless attire may be allowed for special events like special events/dances) 
• Clothing should fully cover the body from armpit to mid-thigh—and it should not be see-through. (shorts/skirts are to extend to the midpoint of the thigh; there is no "fingertip length" rule in DoDEA)
• Shoes must be safe for school—so no bedroom slippers, but open-toed shoes with a back strap are okay. 

What to Avoid 

• Clothing that includes violent, lewd, or discriminatory images or language, or anything promoting alcohol, drugs, or weapons. 
• Headgear that hides the face, unless it’s for religious or health reasons. Hoods are okay, but please keep them down while inside. 
• Any clothing that puts down others based on race, gender, religion, ability, or any part of who they are. 

If you're ever unsure whether something meets the dress code, just ask. We’re here to help you start each day feeling your best. If a student’s outfit doesn’t meet the dress code, we’ll handle it with kindness and care. Our goal is never to embarrass anyone. When needed, we’ll provide a change of clothes so the student can get right back to learning and participating in their day. We know students express themselves in many ways—and clothing is one of them. This policy is about balance: encouraging individuality while making sure school stays a positive place for all.
